Computer Skills Syllabus 2008- 2009

First semester

This year students will be using some online tools to display their work in Mavis Beacon, Microsoft Office and various web skills. The two primary tools will be Google Docs and PB wiki. On the student pbwiki page a student will monitor their own progress in Mavis Beacon and other projects. On their wiki page they will have a Front page that lists at what point they are in completing assignment. The Mavis page will show each day of progress in Mavis. Students will create various HELP pages to help them with particular programs.

Students will learn the four programs of the Microsoft Office Suite: PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Access. Students create fun individual and group projects to help their leaning and present them to each other.  Students also can expect to increase their typing speed by 30 words per minute by using Mavis Beacon teaches typing and the games it includes.

Second semester

Students focus on web skills. During the third quarter students learn HTML (or Hypertext Markup Language) and Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop to help them build web pages. They also learn how to convert, manipulate and use graphics and photos in web pages. The third quarter students get a sampling of the Macromedia Programs: Fireworks, Flash, Freehand and Dreamweaver. For a final project students work in groups to research and create a professional web page for a local non-profit agency.
